Early Unit 5C History

The original Communications Unit 5 was built and operated by J.D. Goings AA4P and Dale Culp W1BPP  Circa 1996.

Both J.D. and Dale served as communicators with Unit 5 until the summer/fall of 2005.

We are pulling information together on early 5C history.

COMMUNICATIONS UNIT 5C GETS MAJOR FACE LIFT

October 2005, work began to refurbish unit 5C. Contents of the trailer was removed and a good cleaning of the exterior followed. The interior received thorough cleaning and a new coat of paint. New tires were installed, 4 amateur  radios, one business band radio and  1 citizen band radio were installed. Two gel cell batteries were added as backup for generated power. Fixed antennas were mounted, message boards were affixed and other supplies were brought in. Our new Star Band satellite dish was set up and tested with the use of the units new laptop computer. A new Honda Deluxe generator was donated and quickly found a home within the unit. Roof top racks were installed to house HF antenna mast. Virtually everything was reconfigured and carefully laid out. Unit 5 carries many state of the art features.

As of 12-13-05, 5C is near re-commissioning and is poised to re-enter service within Disaster Relief. The refurbishment will be an asset to our mission and Unit 5's control operators. The attention to detail can certainly be seen as you walk into the unit. We are very pleased with the outcome of this project.

Work and/or material were donated by:
